On Sunday night, tears streamed down the faces of basketball purists after Laker great, Kobe Bryant, revealed his plans of retiring after the 2015-2016 season. While the news was inevitable, the realization left fans and his contemporaries gloomy. Kobe changed the game forever and will be considered an integral figure in the world of basketball.
“But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer,” Bryant wrote. “This season is all I have left to give. My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind but my body knows it’s time to say goodbye,” he penned for The Players Tribune.
Despite his putrid performance this year, Kobe is still a heralded player with innumerable accolades. He’s currently the third-leading scorer of all-time in NBA history with an astounding 32,670 points. He’s a 17-time All-Star with five championships, and two Finals MVPs. In addition, Bryant is the only player to ever spend 20 seasons with one franchise.
