Since 2007, XXL has compiled a Freshman 10 list in hopes of instilling a sense of promise to the rap game. They would handpick 10 emcees who they thought possessed the juice needed to segue from bubbling rapper to full-fledge superstar. They were able to predict accurately on several occasions with Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and more. They did drop the ball at times calling on Diggy Simmons, O.J. the Juiceman and Donnis for the win. While the job of picking 10 rookies to shine in the big league is definitely an arduous task, we give credit where credit is due. Take a look as we breakdown which class is the best one to date.

XXL Freshman Class (2016)
Consider these guys to be the weakest of the bunch. While they do boast a Billboard riser in Desiigner, the list falls short of delivering long-term successes. Maybe Dave East? Kodak Black. Only time will tell.
XXL Freshman Class (2007)
It’s hard to diminish the lyricists on this list. When you have lyrical swordsmen like Papoose, Saigon, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I, and Lupe, you have a voracious group of spitters. Sadly, the only one who really excelled from the Class of ’07 was Lupe Fiasco.
