There a few anniversaries today, but the most prominent thing that’s happened in hip hop history on January 15th would have to be the release of “Gin and Juice.” This single was released 22 years ago today by Snoop Dogg, and it definitely set the tone for the rapper’s continued success following. The song is still one of Snoop’s biggest and most known of today, and we have to take a look back.

The song’s reception
The song was off of Snoop’s debut Doggystyle album, reaching no. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, selling 700,000 copies. It was also nominated for a Best Rap Solo Performance Grammy. It even has been named number 8 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs of All-Time.
The making of “Gin and Juice”
After working closely together on many other records and projects, the record was produced for Snoop by Dr. Dre, who pulled interpolation from Slave’s “Watching You.” The song has been covered by many other groups over the years, including bands.
