Royce Da 5’9” Speaks On Giving Up His Biggest Addiction & Being a Black Father In America

Retracing Royce’s Father’s Addition On “Tabernacle”

[above4]

On your record “Tabernacle”, you addressed your father’s addiction and his struggles. During your struggle of alcoholism, did you see any traces of him in you?

R59: Oh yeah. I’m just like my dad. I’m just like my dad sober. I look up to my dad on so many levels because he had his afflictions. He had his problems. But, one thing that I admire about my dad over any man ever is that he always stayed. He was always there. He was always a provider. He never missed one basketball game. I learned respect in the household and I feel that every child should, you know? If you set your child up to learn disrespect out on the streets, they may not survive that. I flare up against my dad, he’ll put me through a shower door. Going through that experience, you won’t be so quick to flare up on people in the street. He instilled so many things to me that I’ve found useful in my adulthood and I think that’s why I’m still living.
