The young rapper opens up.
In a new video for Mass Appeal, up-and-coming Baton Rouge rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again revealed that he should probably go through counseling. The rapper, who has made his name on incredibly grim tales of violence and inner-city life, said that he thinks he needs to deal with his anger issues.
“I have all bad days,” he said in the new video. “I think I need help. I got an anger problem.” Those issues may have come from dealing with the realities of growing up in Baton Rouge. He painted a bleak picture of his hometown when asked about it. “It was a challenge,” he said. “Baton Rouge is all about staying alive. It don’t matter if you in that set or you out that set. Ain’t no hiding from gun violence. Ain’t no hiding from violence, period. It’s either jail or death, like literally. Ain’t no living out there.”
He also explained the sort-of life he used to live in Baton Rouge, saying that he was always ready to rob somebody. “I ain’t used to let sh*t slide. I used to be wild,” he said. “I done did a lot of bad sh*t. I’m a good person. I’m not a bad person.”
The “41” rapper said he would have told his younger self to calm down and focus on the music if he was able to talk to him. “Work harder. Start focusing on the music more,” he said, when asked to give advice to his younger self. “I think I would have dodged jail.”
The rapper went into detail about his time in jail.
“It was really just building me up,” he said. “It taught me a lot. I don’t like saying it’s the best thing that happened to me because that ain’t good for nobody. But it was a challenge. It was a lesson.”
“In jail, you don’t never talk. Ya heard me?” he continued. “That n*gga that talk all day they gon’ feel like they got you figured out… They gonna come at you in a way that they done thought up. If they don’t know you, they ain’t gonna approach you.”
YoungBoy also has some interesting taste. When he was asked to share his favorite music, he named some unexpected names like fun. And Matisyahu. He also gave props to Kendrick Lamar who he said tells a story in “the right way” and “the most creative way.”
YoungBoy came to fame after he started collaborating with 21 Savage. But he says that their relationship is friends first.
“That’s big bro,” he said, before detailing a time that he rolled up on the rapper carrying a weapon. “He said ‘Put that up you don’t need that around here.’”
YoungBoy went on to say that the pair rarely discusses music when they’re around each other.
“We don’t really speak about music when we’re around each other,” he said. “We just be on some vibing sh*t, having fun sh*t.”
But on the subject of music, YoungBoy says he has unheard tracks with Yo Gotti, Future, Meek Mill, Famous Dex, Lil Yachty and Lil Durk.
