Will he do it?
Young Thug releases music at a clip that’s almost impossible to keep up with. He’s always working on a collaborative mixtape or a new project. Calling a recent run of releases Slime Season is apt because a new one seems to come along every few months.
The rapper has spent an ungodly run of mixtapes shifting the boundaries of what we should expect from a rap album, always darting toward the oddest choice just to show that he cane. The strangest thing that the oddball Atlantan could do at this point is stop. And that’s exactly what he plans to do.
Thug recently told Hypebeast that he’s taking this entire year off in honor of his deaf brother.
“I’ve got a deaf brother,” he said in a video interview where he was seated next to his girlfriend Jerrika Karlae. “I’ve got a brother who can’t hear or talk, so I want to act deaf for a year. So, I ain’t going to put out no music this year.”
He said that when he returns, he’ll probably be ready to drop his debut studio album Hi-Tunes.
“In 2019, I’m going to put out probably Hi-Tunes,” he said, reminding us all that everything from Beautiful Thugger Girls and Barter 6 on back was technically an unofficial release.
We’re wondering if this is a real proclamation or one of those half-cocked things that Thug likes to toss into the world every once in a while. When his not-album Jeffery dropped, he tried to change his name from Young Thug to “No, My Name Is Jeffery.” It didn’t stick for long, though that might have been from a general unwillingness of the world around him to address him by the new moniker. He recently said that his new name was “S*x,” but it’s unclear how serious the rapper was with that request.

The long-winded name change wasn’t the first time that people weren’t down with what Thug was doing. In fact, he’s made a career on bucking what people expect and suffering regular draggings by more conservative-minded hip-hop types. He compared himself to Tupac after the release of Thugger Girls and set off old head alarms even among young rappers.
“I dropped E.B.B.T.G. on 2PAC’s bday because I’m the #NewPac. I feel like I’m the thug he didn’t get to become,” he wrote.
YFN Lucci balked at the idea and pointed toward another Thug decision that caused a lot of folks to give him a side-eye.
“Pac would’ve never wore a dress,” he tweeted, clearly making reference to the cover of Thug’s mixtape Jeffery in which he wears a billowy blue dress and a matching rice paddy-style hat. Fat Joe could barely complete a sentence after Nadeska Alexis asked him to comment on Thug’s dress, bailing on the whole interview rather than sharing his opinion.
Young Thug presumably, carried on not giving a d*mn about what anyone had to say. Check out his interview with Hypebeast up top. What do you think? Are you sad about a Thug-less year? Do you think he’ll hold to it or is he just talking? Sound off in the comments and be sure to SHARE this article.
