It’s a sad day for rapper Trina. Her mom, Verness ‘Nessa’ Taylor, passed away Tuesday morning after losing a battle to cancer, according to TMZ. She was 62.
According to the news outlet, sources close to Trina expressed how much the rapper loved her mom. They say she was Trina’s rock and molded her into the woman she is today. Nessa was also a tower of strength in her community and advocated self-love, confidence and perseverance among women, says TMZ.
Trina’s mom has been battling cancer for a while. In 2017, Trina paid tribute to Ms. Nessa on “Mama,” a song featuring singer Kelly Price:
Thinking ’bout you mama / Got me running to the liquor / Mama where you goin’? / I’m gon’ have to beg to differ / I’d rather go first, so I wanna go with you ’cause I can’t do this without you.
The song was released as a single in 2017, turned into a video in November 2018, then later added to Trina’s 2019 album, The One. She gave The Recording Academy a behind-the-scenes look from the set of the video and explained her inspiration behind the track…
“My mom was kinda sick when I was in the studio making this song, and I was in a really down place,” she told the interviewer. “I called her on the phone, she wasn’t feeling so good, so that inspired the song. I just went into the studio with all these emotions … and that’s how it came out.”
She ended the interview, saying, “Respect, admire, love your mom… You only get one mom in the entire world. You can never, ever get another one. No matter what happens, one only comes your way, that’s a blessing.”
