The End of an Era of Collaboration!
In the industry of hip-hop, it seems like the majority of rappers will take pretty much every opportunity they can to start a beef. Some of the longest-lasting rivalries are so drawn out that the reasons behind them seem insignificant in comparison.
That’s why, in the case of The-Dream and Drake, it’s kind of refreshing to see that The-Dream reacted to disrespect very calmly. The disrespect from Drake would have caused many other rappers to start years-long feuds, but The-Dream played it off so calmly that you would never guess it even happened… Except for the fact that he and Drake haven’t collabed on anything since “Shut it Down” in 2010.
In 2010, Drake was just at the beginning of his career. His style and beats were becoming more and more iconic, and he was collaborating with a different circle of artists, including The-Dream.
They worked on “Shut it Down” together, but what Drake did after that was enough to make The-Dream decide never to collaborate with him again.
Even though the actual collaboration wasn’t the problem, it probably didn’t help things that Drake seemed to be kind of picky in the process of making “Shut it Down.”
In an interview, The-Dream recalled the process, saying, “I remember when Drake was putting this record together. I was getting calls, after calls, after calls.” So he told Drake, “I’ma do the record, like I’m on tour, as soon as I get to a place, I’ma do it.”
But appently Drake had a very specific sound in mind. The-Dream said, “Drake called like, yo, this is how I want it to sound. I’m, like Drake, I’m going to do this record how I’m gonna do it. I’m going to give it back to you the same way you sent it with your verse…”
Even though Drake was pretty picky, The-Dream said, “The record came out great.”
Hit me back
When a rapper gives someone else a record, it normal opens up a two-way street. So The-Dream reached out to Drake to see if he’d want to do another collaboration for one of The-Dream’s songs, and that’s where the disrespect started.
After The-Dream reached out, Drake never got back to him.
“I asked him to get on a record, and he never got on the record. I’m only going to ask you once especially if I’ve already done something for you,” he said.
