If you never heard of Teyana Taylor until last night, you’ve got some catching up to do. Last night, Kanye West introduced the world to Teyana Taylor after premiering his video “FADE” at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. I’m sure you’re rushing to search Google, but let me give you a rundown on who this girl is: She’s more than a woman with the incredible body that every woman will now starve themselves to get. She’s a triple threat and embodies the definition.
The Harlem native has been on the scene for a while but was musically introduced to us when she came out with her hit 2008 single, “Google Me,” under Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak label. But she’s done so much more than that. She may be new to some people, but she’s been around for a while. From getting her start on MTV, to being signed to one of rap’s biggest label, Teyana Taylor has been ON and she’s here to stay.
Popping at 16
In early 2007, Teyana signed to super-producer Pharrell Williams’ label, Star Trak Entertainment.
That same year, she was first introduced to the world when she appeared on season four of MTV’s My Super Sweet 16. The show followed Teyana as she prepared for her “80s old school skateboard” themed birthday party. She came out in a box as a Barbie doll, wearing a custom-designed Heatherette dress, carried by four shirtless men. She also performed at her party before being gifted a BMX bike and a Land Rover.
Teyana parted ways with Star Trak in 2012 before signing with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label, five months later.
She’s More Than a Triple Threat
Teyana Taylor is a singer, a rapper, an actress, a model, a great dancer and much more. She does all of these things well. She got her start in 2007 and has been around for a while. Now, a recording artist on G.O.O.D. Music label, Teyana has been featured on numerous hits like, Kanye’s “Dark Fantasy.” She also put out her own projects, including album VII, that peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop album chart in 2014. She just finished her VII Unplugged Tour.
In the film world, she’s appeared on Stomp the Yard: Homecoming and other small films. But you may remember her from Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family. She played Sabrina, the crazy baby’s mama of Byron, played by Shad Moss.
Well, almost. The triple threat is engaged to Iman Shumpert, shooting guard for Cleveland Cavaliers. He was also in Kanye’s video during the steamy shower scene, and at the very end, along with their 8-month old daughter, Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr., who they affectionately call Junie.
He popped the question at the couple’s baby shower, months before the birth. According Teyana, she didn’t know she was in labor until she felt her baby’s head. Clearly it was too late to get to a hospital, so Iman delivered their baby girl with his bare hands. She detailed the incredible story in an Instagram post:
“Not knowing I was in labor until I felt her head…it took two ten count pushes with my fiancé playing Dr and she entered this world into his bare hands! Eyes full of tears and barely able to speak to the emergency operator @imanshumpert tied a pair of red headphones around the umbilical cord and the ambulance made there grand entrance 5 min later. She opened her eyes right away, gazed into mine and never cried! He handed her to me wrapped in our bath towel and wiped her face for me to see what LOVE really is.”
