Best it could have gone
SWV’s Coko just announced that she’s split from her husband of 15 years Mike Clemons. The R&B singer shared the news on her website, saying that the split came as a shock to both of them.
In a blog post called “After The Love Is Gone,” Coko revealed the sad news.
“We always thought we’d be together forever! Through the good, the bad, the ugly, the ups and the downs…we’d still be married,” she wrote. “But, things don’t always work out the way we plan or hope. After 15 years of marriage, my husband and I have decided to call it quits. Our fairytale has come to an end. I’ll definitely miss him! But life goes on and I have to make the best of it.”
In spite of the fact that she sees it as a fairy tale coming to an end, Coko seems to be on good terms with her now ex-husband. She said that they remain friends and plan to co-parent their child.
“I wish him all the best in his future. I pray that he will lack nothing!” she wrote. “For the sake of our son we will do our best to co-parent. We’re not enemies, we’re just two people that fell out of love.”
Coko added that she has a strong group around her who will help her get through this tough time.
“Life after divorce kind of scares me, but I have to be strong for myself and my son. God got me and I’m surrounded by a great group of family and friends that hold me down,” She wrote. “My Village!! I am blessed and highly favored!”
Coko never really let on that there was trouble in paradise, but in an interview with Essence all the way back in 2009 she said that she did bump heads with her then-hubby because they were both so independent-minded.
“My mom was very independent, so it was hard for me to learn how to be submissive to my husband,” she said, explaining that she felt she should to “[support] him in whatever he needs and [allow] him to be a man.”
“Too often as independent women we don’t do that, and I don’t even think it’s intentional. I think we are just so used to doing things on our own that we overlook our men. So I’ve grown a lot and learned to work together with my husband and allow him to support and help me with things that I might need. Now I don’t cook, but my husband is a great cook, so I do everything but that.”
It’s far from the first long-term couple we’ve seen come crashing down. Cam’ron and his girl Juju parted ways after 15 years together… a split that Cam blamed on Instagram.
“Yeah well you know basically it was just kind of mutual,” he said of their split on The Breakfast Club. “You know’ for me it just wasn’t fun anymore. I met Juju in 2002, she was my friend before we even started being serious. That was my homegirl and everything was fun. But for me, once Instagram came out. I’m the one promoting her and marketing her. Basically, it just stopped being fun.”
