If Aaliyah has even a distant ear towards Earth from the after-life, then she knows how much she’s missed. After her tragic death in 2001, she left a hole in the middle of hip-hop and R&B.
The late singer’s 39th birthday would have been Tuesday (Jan. 16). In her honor, longtime collaborator Missy Elliot posted a mini tribute to her on Twitter.
“Aaliyah so many people [love] your Style & Music!” Missy began. “I wish they all got a chance to meet you to see how CARING you were to EVERYONE you met!”
The rapper and record producer went on to say that she could still hear Aaliyah and fellow producer Timbaland — who also used social media to wish the “Try Again” singer a happy birthday — “joking.”
“I CAN STILL HEAR YOU LAUGH,” she added.
“We MISS YOU so much but I know you are surrounded by ANGELS 4 your BDAY,” Missy concluded. “WE LOVE U”
The post was liked nearly 40 thousand times and retweeted 14 thousand times. More than that, fans filled the comments with love and birthday wishes for the passed artist.
“A Magnetic and Transcendent Young Woman”
Aspiring producer and filmmaker Jimir Reece Davis, professionally known as Amorphous, replied to Missy’s tweet, sharing that he’s been into Aaliyah’s music since he was young.
After saying that the star “changed and impacted my life” in unthinkable ways, Davis said Aaliyah “resonated” with him on more than a musical level. “You could tell that she was such a magnetic and transcendent young woman. We miss her,” he concluded.
