Big Things Ahead
K. Michelle has been active since 2009. The 33-year-old was welcomed into the R&B scene after signing with Jive Records. Her record deal produced singles like “Fakin’ It,” “Fallin,” and “I Just Can’t Do This.” Though her tracks earned spots on the charts, K. Michelle was still considered a bit of an underdog.
So, she kept working.
She joined the cast of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta in 2012, which set her up to ink a new deal with Atlantic Records. Under her shiny new contract, she released Rebellious Soul, an album that hit no. 2 on the Billboard 200 and no. 1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.
Her following albums — Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? and More Issues Than Vouge — did comparatively well, but still…
The R&B singer, songwriter, and television personality felt the need to reinvent herself to be better incorporated in the business world. In October of this year, reports that K. Michelle was going back under the knife hit the internet. Born Kimberly Pate, the singer decided to size down her derrière.
During an interview with LoveBScott years back, the star said she wanted her “normal shape back” because she didn’t want people “looking down at my a**” during business meetings or gatherings. She also said that she didn’t want her shape to prevent her from branching out into movies.
Now, she’s doing it again… this time, with a new name.
Her bottom reduction a few years ago took fans by surprise, but nothing is more shocking than reports that’s she getting a new name.
Well, not a new name…
Up until now, the singer’s stage name was her first name’s initial alongside her middle name. Now, the star will simply go by her first name when it comes to her work in the industry.
“No more K. Michelle. K. Michelle… peace. I’m going back to me, going back to who I am,” she began in an Instagram video. “Kimberly. 2018. Remember. I’m not answering to K. Michelle.”
In the caption, the artist said “hey” to her
new old self. She also made sure to say that she wasn’t changing her Instagram handle.
New Year, New You
Kimberly is setting herself up for an amazing 2018. News of her name switch follows reports that she’s having twin baby girls. She broke the news on Twitter, reaching out to other “milfs.”
“I’m giving you guys an album and handing in my last album all at the same time!” she wrote. After saying that she wants to focus on the store she is opening, she reveled that her “docs told [her she] had lupus.”
“I was devastated for two weeks,” she said. “Then the fertility doctor told me that I couldn’t carry twins full terms.”
Before wondering if God was punishing her for previously having an abortion, she shared that the only thing — and the first thing — she could do was pray. “Today we got a call that THEY REALLY FOUND THE PERFECT SURROGATE for us. My hands were shaking,” she tweeted. She continued,
“Still feelin’ punished for what I had done in the past. I had to find the positive because I don’t believe God would leave me out there like that. I had to talk to myself. Things don’t always go as you feel they should but they go and you better go with it.”
As with her name change, the star received tons of positive feedback from her fans regarding her growing family. They encouraged her to always keep her head held high.
