The rapper was killed outside of a Kirkwood pizza place.
Atlanta rapper and Kevin Gates affiliate Yung Mazi was shot and killed on Sunday night (August 6th). According to Atlanta’s local NBC affiliate, Mazi was shot multiple times in the Kirkwood neighborhood in front of a pizza place called Urban Pie. Local authorities say that they responded to the shooting near the intersection of Oakview Road and Hosea L. Williams Drive around 8:55 p.m on Sunday; the incident occurred close enough to their local precinct that they responded to the sounds of it.
Mazi had apparently ordered a pizza from the restaurant and was standing next to his car while waiting for it when he was shot. When the police arrived, they found Mazi and attempted to revive him. The rapper, whose birth name was Jibril Abdur-Rahman, died on the scene.
Police are looking for a black male with dreadlocks in a bun wearing dark jeans and a white t-shirt. Police saw the suspect fleeing when they came upon the scene but were unable to capture him. They believe that the attack on Mazi was planned and targeted at the rapper and not a random act.
The police also believe that Mazi was the sole target of the attack. The shooting that took his life was far from the first time that Mazi’s pre-rap-career life had come back to haunt him in violent and tragic ways.
Not the First Time
Mazi had been shot many times before. The incident that took his life was the second time this year that the rapper had been shot. He was the victim of an attack at a Waffle House in Atlanta last December, where he was shot in the chest.
Shortly after he began his rap career, Mazi was shot five times by a rival. One bullet hit him in the head and forced the rapper to learn to speak and write again. “When the bullet hit me in the head, it greatly affected me,” he recalled in a post on his website. “I had to learn how to read, write, and speak all over again. I’m still not 100% right.”
He was shot again while undergoing rehab for his injuries. “The second time I got shot, I realized that I have to drastically change my lifestyle,” he said. After the incident in the Waffle House, he told authorities that he had been shot 10 times in his life.
Explaining the Process
Mazi had previously shared what it was like to have to re-learn basic functioning after a brain injury in an interview that was posted to YouTube. Watch Mazi explain how it felt to come back from the other shooting incidents up top.
