The eternal old head debate continues
Pete Rock went in on Waka Flocka after the Atlanta rapper went on a rant pooh-poohing the older generation of rap stars for their negativity and bad stewardship of hip-hop.
The whole beef started when Waka sat down with This Is 50 and told the former generation of stars that they need to look in the mirror before they criticize anyone. His rant against hip-hop naysayers told the old heads that all their bad habits were either picked up via imitation of or neglect from their elders.
This didn’t sit well with someone whose name immediately conjures up images of the golden age. Rock went after Waka’s music, his perceived lack of respect for the older generation, and his music’s longevity (or lack thereof) in a lengthy Instagram screed. Underneath a picture of Waka, he began:
“I’m gonna defend my older heads and tell you you’re not equal. Be as disrespectful as you want. You’re not doing what we did, haven’t accomplished what we accomplished. Our generation didn’t experiment with pills or syrup or anything synthetic. It’s already written in history. Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Hip Hop Hall of Fame and museums. Where are you at in any of that?”
He then asked Waka to kiss the ring.
“We are the reason you are who you are and do whatever it is you’re doing!” he said. “Pay homage to who was before you.”
Pete then went for Waka’s music in particular saying that there was no there there in the “No Hands” rapper’s discography.
“In my opinion, being a music maker, there is no substance to the music of lyrics. So, don’t get mad because you’re not cut from the cloth of hip-hop pioneers,” he said. “Just make better music and spit like an MC.”
Waka wasn’t having Pete’s rant. He clapped back at Pete, accusing him of being bitter that he never made anything out of his years long head start on this generation of rappers.
“That n*gga Pete Rock really trying to get a new career off me.” he said. “You a f*cking OG. Why you disrespecting me, man? Damn, that’s sad, my n*gga.”
Waka continued by saying that it wasn’t him Pete was mad at. In his telling, the old head is just angry because he didn’t make the right decisions to set himself up when he was younger.
“You should be running Interscope, Def Jam, Sony, bah bah bah, this that, but you’re not because you’re not a f*cking good businessman,” he said. “Putting words together sounding clever, but not making clever moves.”
A Parting Shot
He also added that Pete Rock got his facts wrong in another video. He said that he doesn’t use lean or pills, and Rock was thinking of someone else. Waka closed with a bit of “no disrespect but…” by saying that he didn’t want to trash Pete Rock — given his important contributions to hip-hop — but that he would fight him if it came to that.
“You ain’t too old to get you a** beat,” he warned.
