Nicki Minaj, who recently released two new singles, was quiet for a few months before sitting down on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 program. She seemingly used the in-depth interview to get a lot of things off her chest, including her thoughts on her ex-boyfriend Meek Mill and Drake’s old (but very public) dispute.
The two rappers infamously released diss after diss against each other, apparently making things very had for the Pink Friday rapper.
“At the time, I did love both of them,” she said.
Stuck in the Middle
“I couldn’t erase the love that I have for my team, but I also couldn’t speak out,” Nicki continued. “I couldn’t really say much. I felt so imprisoned in that moment.”
While the star stayed stark quiet during the altercation, she revealed that she did have a conversation with Drake behind closed doors about it. According to Nicki, Drake was only concerned about whose side Nicki would pick.
Nicki went on, “When we later spoke about it, Drake said, ‘I wasn’t worried about anything in that entire situation other than, ‘What if Nicki takes a shot. What if Nicki takes a shot at me, then what? Like, what if Nicki spits bars at me?’ He said throughout the whole beef that was the only thing he was worried about.”
Nicki not only shed light on Meek and Drake’s situation, she also shared the one thing Cardi B did that “really, really, really hurt [her] feelings.”
“With Cardi B, she’s done exactly what she should have done. She’s just gone full steam ahead, and congradulations to her,” Nicki began. “The only thing with Cardi that really, really, really hurt my feelings was the first interview she did after ‘MotorSport’ came out.”
Rocking a fresh face and long black hair, Nicki used her own experience in the rap industry as an example before making her point about Cardi. She remembered herself as young artist, saying, “I remember when I first came in the game, if a female of that stature had done a feature with me on it, I would only be singing their praises and saying thank you.”
Referencing Cardi’s radio interview with UK’s Capital Xtra, Nicki continued, “The first interview [Cardi] did after ‘MotorSport’ came out… It just really hurt me. Cause she looked so aggravated and angry.” She added, “The only thing she kept saying was ‘Oh, I didn’t hear that,’ ‘I didn’t hear that verse,’ ‘I didn’t hear that,’ ‘She changed her verse.’”
As mentioned by Nicki, merely weeks after “MotorSport” was released, Cardi told Capital Xtra‘s host, “When I heard the track, her verse wasn’t finished — well, it’s not the verse that is out right now — and Quavo told me to get on the song and I just felt like it was a perfect opportunity for me to be on a track that’s big like them… Cause those are two big people.”
After sharing that she felt “ambushed” after the track’s release, Nicki talked about the aftermath of Cardi’s interview and the effect it had on her.
“At the time I went on Twitter, and I explained how ‘MotorSport’ came about. And, you know, people were saying that I was lying,” Nicki continued. “So I texted Quavo, and I said ‘Hey, could you back me up on this? Because, you know, I don’t want people to think I’m lying. What do I have to lie about?’ And he didn’t back me up. He texted me, and he was like, ‘I would go on Twitter and back you up if you were my girl lol.’ And that hurt, because I love him.”
