Not only was Katy Perry’s Super Bowl half-time show highly anticipated, it was highly watched. Alongside superstar Missy Elliot, the duo performed the most watched Super Bowl half-time show to this day. While Katy was the main attraction, Missy got nearly three minutes of the 12-minute-long spotlight.
With a medly of three of her biggest hits, Missy killed the stage as a surprise guest spot. Fans saw her heat things up to “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” and “Lose Control,” earning a 996% sales boost from song and album downloads following the high profile show.
Turns out though, viewers didn’t have the whole story about Missy’s performance.
Well… everything is clearer in hindsight, as they say — and, although viewers’ present sight told them that the 2015 performance was amazing, they had no idea! Nearly three years later, after learning that Missy was hospitalized the night before the show, fans’ hindsight is telling them that the performance was nearly magical.
Making It Work
The star must have been feeling nostalgic, as Missy headed to Twitter with a video of the stellar performance. Sharing a little-known fact about the half-time show, she tweeted, “No1 knew I was in the hospital the night before I had to perform at the SuperBowl.”
Alongside a 30 second clip of herself rapping “Get Ur Freak On,” she said, “& when I heard the beginning of Get Ya Freak On playing I was SO SHOOK. I said Lord I can’t turn back now.” She continued talking about the experience, crediting God for helping her though it. “I’m 4ever HUMBLED,” she ended the post.
The “Lose Control” artist did not reveal the reason she was in the hospital. However, the star was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease years before.
Though Missy has been knowingly living with the disease since her diagnosis in 2008, she didn’t publicize it until 2011. Graves’ Disease, also called Basedow’s disease, is an immune system disorder of the thyroid. Most common in women under 40, Missy was diagnosed at the age of 37.
“You live with it for the rest of your life,” the Virginia native told People in 2011.
The disorder causes the thyroid to overproduce hormones which results in increased anxiety, hand tremors, heat sensitivity, weight loss, puffy eyes, and an enlarged thyroid (in typical cases). Though for Missy, it caused “dizzy spells, lumps in her throat, mood swings, hair loss, a fast heart rate and bulging eyes” after tackling her motor skills.
After radiation treatments and medication, Missy started feeling better. “I feel great,” she continued. “Under my doctor’s supervision, I’ve been off medication for about a year and I’m completely managing the condition through diet and exercise.”
Back in Action
Nowadays, the rapper is back to working on her craft. According to her Instagram feed, she is gearing up for future performances. The star posted a video of Ciara — who collabed with Missy on her song “1, 2 Step” and “Work” — crashing her rehearsals. “Big up my sis ciara who took over my rehearsals,” Missy captioned the video.
In the short clip, viewers can see the “Ride” singer pretending to be Missy, dancing and singing “Get Ur Freak On” while “using her phone as the mic.” She is even dressed as the Grammy winner, wearing all back leather.
“It’s always a blast when she come through!” Missy continued before revealing that Ciara has hot new music coming out soon herself.
