"Unfair and Unwarranted"
Miguel is responding to the resurfacing of allegations that he sexually harassed a University of New Mexico student back in March. After SPIN posted an in-depth feature that blended their cover story interview of the artist with an admission that the writer (and seemingly the music press at large) had forgotten about the allegations, Miguel issued a statement about the incident.
“I felt I had already addressed how bizarre and twisted this accusation was when I was asked about it in March,” he said. “Her story of what transpired is not accurate and the accusation is unfair and unwarranted.”
But what really happen? According to the student named Xian Bass, Miguel pulled her breast out of her shirt after she snapped a selfie with him earlier this year. Bass posted videos detailing the event to her Instagram back in March and filed a report with the Barstow, CA police the next day. In addition to that, she wrote a long reprimand of the singer on an Instagram post that included the selfie.
Dear Miguel, I used to be a fan of your music. I was a fan of your music until you blatantly disrespected my body in a public place. There is nothing I did or said that warranted this disgusting display of entitlement, r*pe culture, and male privilege. I approached you respectfully and you still decided my body was not sacred enough to be treated as a human being. After we took this photo, you took it upon yourself to grab my breast and remove it from my shirt WITHOUT CONSENT. You then proceeded to look at [my chest] with such a disgusting look on your face. It’s still embedded in my memory. The sneer of your lip and salivating mouth is making my stomach turn. I really don’t understand why you would do that to someone who approached you as a fan. I’m beyond disgusted right now. Are you used to treating random female strangers this way? Have you gotten away with this in the past? Well, it stops HERE and NOW. I will not sit in shameful silence and allow sexual assault to be normalized.
Bass told Spin in the new story that her police report was put aside until other women come forward with allegations.
“What the detective said is other women have to come forward,” she told reporter Rich Juzwiak.

While the initial story circulated on gossip sites around the internet, it didn’t seem to stick. TMZ was the largest outlet to ask Miguel about the allegations, which they did when a paparazzo caught up with the singer back in the spring.
“In this age, I guess, you just gotta be more aware of how things can be and how things can be spun,” Miguel said after being asked about the allegations.
He refused to state that it didn’t happen when asked about the story point blank.
“That’s not even it,” he said. “I don’t even feel like that’s a question anyone should ask.”
