K. Michelle typically keeps her son, Chase Bowman, out of the spotlight. Unlike DJ Khaled, Offset, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian as well as Beyoncé and Jay-Z — who often share their little ones with the public, posting them on social media and bringing them to high-profile events — the “Love ‘Em All” singer prefers to keep her baby to herself.
Since his birth in 2004, she’s done an excellent job of keeping her only child under the radar, making sure he was never overly exposed to her fans or the media. Well, for the first time ever, the singer brought her 14-year-old up on stage.
“I love you,” she said, looking at her teenaged son.
A Working Mother
While performing at a concert earlier this month (March), a fan was recording at the perfect time. The moment of the 34-year-old mom dancing to her 2013 song “V.S.O.P.” with her son Chase will forever be saved in a short clip. After dancing around for a minute, K. Michelle — who now goes by Kimberly — hugged her son after telling him that loves him.
“I love him,” she said afterwards, calling him “the reason [she’s] become the woman [she is].”
“Great Job Mom”
“Young, dumb mother who knew nothing about love in this world. I found a real reason to love. I absolutely hate being in the music business, but you keep me fighting. I got off the stage and he said ‘Great Job Mom,'” she continued, adding, “That’s all I ever needed to hear.”
The sweet display sparked an interest in the star’s best kept secret. Fans were made aware of his existence during the first season of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta — Chase was eight years old at the time — but she never allowed for him to be filmed or be involved in the reality television show.
While the status may have changed, back in 2014, Kimberly said her and Chase’s father were “great.” During an interview with NecoleBitchie.com, the artist talked about her baby daddy, who she left “because [she] wanted to be a singer. [She] wanted to be a star.”
“I was determined to be a star, and I didn’t want to have a family. I wanted my child, but I didn’t want to be with him,” she revealed. Before saying that she hadn’t see the father of her child in years, she told the outlet that he ended up dating (and subsequently marrying) one of her Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters.
“So, really to hurt me he started to date my sorority sister that I brought in and pledged. And that was very embarrassing for me, and it was very hurtful,” she said. “But we haven’t fought. Like, we haven’t fought or been going in. Actually, I say the past year and a half to two years, he’s been very supportive.”
“When people have gone in on me and said things about me, he’s been the one to defend a lot of things, you know?” she continued. “Even from people at school he said, ‘You don’t even know her. Yeah, she can be a lot, but you don’t know her.’”
Hopefully, as Chase grows older, K. Michelle fans will get to see him more often. For now, tell us your thoughts on her parenting methods in the comments and SHARE this article.
