He was so close to being free
It’s been almost six months since we’ve been able to enjoy performances by Kevin Gates; he’s been locked up for allegedly kicking a woman in the chest while he was on stage. It’s almost like a cruel joke… just as he was walking out of prison, he was taken back into custody for a warrant that the police should have found way earlier. The judge in this new case won’t even allow him to go home with his family while he awaits the trial.
Kevin Gates was set to perform at the Voodoo Music & Arts Experience in New Orleans in 2016 when he was yanked from the roster due to his “unforeseen incarceration.”
Kevin went to court to give his side of the story after a female fan in Florida touched his shorts while he was onstage, and it looked like he delivered a damaging kick to her chest.
Other footage that emerged didn’t show the kick connecting to her, but she called the cops regardless.
Stand Your Ground
During the one-day trial, Kevin changed his story a few times, saying at first that he didn’t recall any incident, then saying that he did in fact kick her (which was totally legal under the “Stand Your Ground” law). He felt that the fan tried multiple times to grab his crotch, and he was just protecting himself.
Because he admitted to kicking her for merely touching his pants, he was sentenced to 180 days in jail with credit for time served in October 2016.
While Kevin was being processed out of the jail in Florida for the kicking incident, he was re-arrested. He was extradited straight away to a hearing, and the judge at the Bridgeview Courthouse in Illinois denied him bond. He was being held on a charge he didn’t even see coming.
