Spilling the Tea
On the List
Should Gotti make good on his vows to tell Murder Inc.’s story, the series will be added to a steadily-lengthening list of must-watch hip-hop productions.
Following early biopics like 8 Mile and Notorious, Straight Outta Compton kicked off a string of the most recent hip-hop biographies. The 2015 film set the tone for All Eyez on Me and The New Edition Story. After its August release, the 147-minute movie made over $200 million, surpassing its $50 million budget by… a lot.
Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave Straight Outta Compton three and half out of four stars in his review of the film. The critic said it was “enthralling” and “energized.” Lou Lumenick of New York Post offered a similar review, calling it “one of the summer’s most entertaining and provocative movies.”
