Check Out These Bedroom Bangers
The Pharcyde “Passin Me By” (1993)
This song!! Probably the first rap I ever heard to be semi-self deprecating, way before “not getting laid” was cool in hip-hop. Cali’s Pharcyde take turns on this track talking about schoolboy crushes and let downs. Produced by J-Swift, the song is backed by samples from Jimi Hendrix, some jazzy Weather Report, and it’s all rounded out with some Quincy Jones bass lines make it the best make-out song on this list.
UGK “Use Me Up” (1992)
Much like the Bill Withers’ sample the song gets its name from, Pimp C feels himself a little “used up” after falling in love with a “lady of the night.” This isn’t some Tony Bennett style love song, but it’s the same idea… I just couldn’t imagine Tony singing something like, “Every day it gets better, I can’t lie/ I ate the p**** and it taste like hot potato pie.”
The Boogie Monsters “Honey Dips in Gotham” (1994)
One of the more obscure tracks on this list from the lost world of mid 90s NYC hip-hop that wasn’t on MTV. “Honey Dips” is a feel good song with a classic Isley Brothers sample that works great for V-day.
