Dollar Dolla Bills Y'all
In September, Gucci had big dreams. After he delayed the release of his highly-anticipated album Mr. Davis, he hopped on Twitter, writing, “2018 I’m going 100 percent independent and dropping a mixtape every other day #MrDavisTheAlbum.” Fans took his vow to be an independent artist seriously, showering him with lots of love and support. With artists like Chance The Rapper finding success without the backing of a major label, going independent is looking better and better.
Exactly 38 days later though, Gucci announced that he’s going to go ahead and stay where the lovin’ is good (and reliable). “Thank You AtlanticRecords for the 10 million dollar extension #ELGATOTheHumanGlacier I appreciate It sincerely,” he tweeted.
Million Dollar Deals
Because nothing gets past Twitter’s hip-hop commentators, a couple of meme’s about Gucci reneging on his vow to go independent popped up almost instantly. Some even accused the “Back on Road” rapper of throwing out a false promise to squeeze more money out of Atlantic Records. As long as Guwop is giving his fans his all though, the label doesn’t really seem to matter to them. Most fans replied to his celebratory tweet with well-wishes and congratulations.
Mr. Davis — which donned features from The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign and more — sold over 70k copies in its first week. The album also earned a No. 1 spot on the Top R&B and Hip-Hop charts and the Top Rap charts.
Besides scoring a $10 million deal and killing Billboard‘s charts, Gucci is still high off of his million dollar wedding to Keyshia Ka’oir. Mr. and Mrs. Davis’ whirlwind romance started in 2010 after Keyshia went on tour with the Trap God artist. As Keyshia told the New York Post‘s Page Six:
“I went on tour with Gucci in 2010 — that is when it really started to get serious. I fell in love with Gucci when I bathed him… I put him in a shower and just bathed him. I just did things to him and he looked at me and said, ‘Wow, no one has ever bathed me before.’ I am a traditional Jamaican lady, that is what you do. You take care of your man.”
Seven years later, when they married in October of 2017, the stars’ wedding was nothing short of flawless. The star studded event — with guests like Big Sean, Monica, Diddy, and Rick Ross — was an all white affair that aired on BET.
Love & Bliss
Yes, rapper Khia tried to blemish Gucci and Keyshia’s perfect affair, blasting Keyshia for hiding her children in Jamaica where the former video vixen is from. However, Mrs. Davis didn’t sweat it.
The Ka’oir Cosmetics owner revealed during an interview with The Breakfast Club that she does have children, though not in Jamaica, who are “spoiled” and “happy.” According to Gucci’s wife, she raises her kids in Atlanta with her new husband. Despite Khia’s best dirt-digging, Keyshia’s children did in fact attend her million dollar wedding.
“It’s a situation where I am proud to be a mother but, at the same time, I need it to be private. I don’t want the kids in the lime light. I don’t want the kids on social media,” she shared. “I need them to go to school and to just be children. It’s never a situation where they’re left with my mom. They all live with us and we have a blended family and we have fun and they’re spoiled and they’re happy.”
