Remember the viral video out of Banda Aceh, Indonesia? It sparked international outrage and put a harsh spot light on Sharia Law, as it showed two gay men being beaten by vigilantes for… well… being gay. Since then, the reports and outcries of violence against homosexuals have just kept coming.
In response, Frank Ocean shared his view of the world from the eyes of a gay man. The personal, heartfelt letter was posted on Tumblr from Frank to anyone willing to listen (or read). The letter gained tons of traction, but not all of it was good. Frank’s father is actually suing him over the post.
After stories of unspeakable violence in the name of Sharia Law hit the headlines, Frank Ocean was so moved that he spoke out on his tumblr page. The 402 word post touched on many things, one of which included Frank’s father.
“I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty. That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.”
Million Dollar Words
Frank’s estranged father, Calvin Cooksey, took issue with the way the post portrayed him. The complaint stated that Calvin felt like the letter was portraying him as a homophobic and transphobic person. He also said that the letter was written to ruin him and for the success of Frank’s album Blonde.
Calvin’s response to Frank’s letter to the world: a $14.5 million libel lawsuit.
Frank says he is immune to his father’s suit because of the fact that his letter was filled with his own opinions and are “not the proper subjects of a libel claim.” He stands by everything that he said, saying the writing speaks for itself.
