Frank Ocean is a man who has made himself into a sort of mysterious R&B hermit who occasionally comes down from the mountaintop with two new albums and a carpentry lesson, but even he needs to go HAM for his 30th birthday. So, that’s exactly what he did.
The Blonde crooner threw a Paris Is Burning-style drag ball for the big 3-0 and brought along famous friends like SZA and his Odd Future compatriot Tyler, the Creator. Reportedly, Frank’s fabulous ball also included stop-ins from Brad Pitt and Adele. Looking at the pictures, we can’t blame them for wanting to get involved.
Everything about this party, from the enthusiastic MCs to the flaming Eiffel Tower centerpiece, looks amazing. Plus, Frank’s bedazzled outfit is worth the price of admission.
Where before Tyler’s participation in the ball might have been met with a bit of side-eye by people who considered him homophobic, recent revelations on Flower Boy have cast his entire discography in a different light. And, of course, there’s the fact that Tyler is going to be all in for just about anything his friend Frank does.
A Great Year
Ocean’s clearly on a high. If the drag ball isn’t enough to convince you, just read his most recent essay. Ocean shared a visual tour diary of photos he had taken on the road over the summer and explained it with an in-the-moment-and-loving-it letter. Frank has a thing for open letters. He became a household name with the help of one, after all. And this one lives up to his reputation. Check it out below:
“You can answer a lot of questions with ‘Yes.’ But you can answer many more with ‘No. No is run-of-the-mill. Yes is a gem. Whenever I feel alone I watch live television, something about it being okay on their end makes it okay on mine. Onstage one in-ear is my mic feed and the other one is a Tim Ferriss podcast. I go long periods without talking but I raise my voice when the people on the phone are in loud places. I’ve never given my fans nicknames because the ones I think of are embarrassing. I’m world famous. I had peace in my twenties. Big Pharrell praying hands those weren’t mutually exclusive. If you want to make your 30s sound appealing just mention ‘sexual prime.’ Re: the photos… as Karl Lagerfeld would say they ‘came to me in a dream.’ Summer two thousand and seventeen. We leaned into it. Bananaberry-flavored candies at the bottom of the cup. I’ll never know why or what’s with campouts for Szechuan sauce at McDonalds. But I’m way into it. Issa Dreamworld. If you liked two thousand and seventeen then you’ll love two thousand and eighteen.”
Frank released two albums in 2017, so the idea that 2018 is going to be even bigger is really exciting to all the Frank fans (no cute names, like he said) out there. Are we going to see new Frank in the near future?
