Trouble in Paradise
American rapper and actor Eve, also known as Eve Jihan Jeffers-Cooper, was recently a guest on the show The Talk, where she shared a story of a harrowing experience she had at an award show’s after-party years back.
Eve broke out into the hip-hop scene as the first female artist to be signed to Ruff Ryders label, who have been known for notable acts such as The Lox and DMX. Her debut album was released through Ruff Ryders and Interscope in 1999, titled Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady. The album was certified double platinum by the RIAA and peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200. Eve went on to release three more studio albums, the latest of which was released in 2013.
Eve has also had a significant run in film and television as well. Along with an extensive list of appearances and cameos in other shows, Eve starred in her own series Eve, that ran from 2003 to 2006. In 2017, Eve was revealed as the fifth co-host of the show The Talk following former host Aisha Tyler’s departure from the role.
Although her story was a frightening experience for her, it resulted in her meeting superstar singer Janet Jackson for the first time. A clip of her describing the whole ordeal was posted to The Talk’s Facebook page on Monday.
At the award show after-party where the situation took place, Eve said that there were many people she knew from the industry in attendance. She felt comfortable enough to leave her drink unattended at different times throughout the night as she chatted with people at the party. Eventually, Eve started to sense that something wasn’t right.
“Probably an hour after the last time I picked my drink up, I started feeling crazy… And not drunk. I knew immediately something was different, and it was weird, because I was there, but I wasn’t there. I forget who I was with; whoever I was with I kind of tapped them on the shoulder and was like ‘something is wrong.’ And they were like, ‘no, you’re just drunk.’ And then I started hysterically crying.”
Eve explained that after her friend realized something wasn’t right, she was put into a room where she kept crying and panicking. At one point in her episode, Eve recalls hearing a “really soft voice”, that said “it’s okay, its okay, I’ll take care of it”. She soon finds out that voice belonged to Janet Jackson.
As Jackson was consoling her, Eve said described how incredibly embarrassed she was to have met her in such a state, noting on how ugly she thinks she is when she snot-cries. “I didn’t want to meet you like this!”, Eve said on the show, as she mimicked her past-self sobbing. Host and fellow actor Sara Gilbert chimed in to highlight a silver lining of the evening. “Now you’re bonded forever,” she said, to which Eve agreed.
The clip ends with actress and comedian Sheryl Underwood suggesting the solution to avoiding the same situation again. “You know how you solve that problem?” she asks. “Bring your own drinks.” Underwood then pulls out cups, bags of garnish, ice, a flask, and alcohol from her sneakily large pockets. She shares a bit with Sara Gilbert, and makes a toast.
Not bad advice, Sheryl. Not bad.
