DStarmaker’s Tips: What Managers Look for in Artists

As an underground artist or producer, you probably have a tough time finding the right team — especially a manager willing to go hard for you. HHMW caught up with Donald Richardson of Starmaker Management to give you tips on what managers look for artists to have before taking them on as a client.

Donald Richardson is a music professional that brings experiences that span over decades. Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin signed him to Def Jam as an artist when he was a teenager. Since then, he’s worked with and has been mentored by some of the most powerful people in the music business. Donald has traveled the world and has met so many artists along the way. One thing he found was that artists he met and spoke with didn’t have or weren’t given the proper information to help them achieve the dream.

In 2009, he started Starmaker Management and has an artist roster consisting of some of the best in the game. PHresher is signed to Empire Records, and was the only feature on Eminem’s last album. Don also secured a deal that PHresher will wear Nike “Uptowns” every day during 2019. Bianca Bonnie is now signed to Universal and her single drops early March 2019. She also has many branding deals, including Fashion Nova. Platinum Producer, Eric Hudson, who produced “Flashing Lights,” was just picked up for a three-year deal with Christian Dior and also produced two songs on Justin Timberlake’s last album. Donald also manages Juan Yé, who co-produced PnB Rock’s “Feelins” and others.

With 10 artists and producers signed to him collectively, and partnerships with Watermusic, Raliegh Music publishing, Big Machine Media, and Hip Hop My Way, Starmaker plans to continue to grow and expand in 2019 and beyond.
