This is tragic
Brazilian DJ Kaleb Freitas died as the result of a stage collapse at the Atmosphere festival in Esteio, Brazil.
Video from attendees shows the massive scaffolding around the stage on which Kaleb was performing get pulled down around him in high winds. The gusts caused a collapse of the lighting rig and several people were injured, including Kaleb.
Freitas was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of head trauma suffered during the collapse. The news was first reported by Gauchazh, a newspaper for the nearby city of Porto Alegre.
Underneath an image of a black ribbon which said “LUTO” (Portuguese for “mourning”), the festival organizers shared how they were feeling in the wake of the tragedy in a post to their Facebook:
“We always cherish the security of our audience, following all the processes, reports and authorisations requested by the local authorities. And to our audience we will keep them informed of all our actions to keep the truth about the facts that have occurred. Anyway, we’re sorry, we lost a friend, an artist. Our priority is to assist the wounded and their families. We thank the military brigade and the fire department for all assistance.”
The 30-year-old DJ from Porto Alegre appears to be the only death caused by the terrifying stage collapse that was caught on video by many attendees. A tribute page for the up-and-comer has also popped up on the social media platform. Fans and friends alike are sharing their memories of the late DJ on his profile.
“You were a person of great light and your smile charmed many people. I told you that less than three weeks ago and be assured we will always remember you with a huge smile on your face,” wrote Kaka Guimaraes.
“Angel of my heart, friendship without limits. We are selfish by nature and do not want to lose anyone but your day to go up to Heaven has come,” wrote Andressa Schorner.
“Nothing and no one will ever replace the great and good-hearted person you were,” wrote Douglas Santos.

According to TMZ an investigation has been launched into why the festival — which had 5,000 people on site at the time of the stage collapse — didn’t evacuate despite the unfavorable weather conditions. The collapse reportedly caused a stampede of people and the winds were still tossing parts of the festival infrastructure around after the collapse.
“It was madness. The scale of the tragedy could have been far worse,” said Sergio Bandoca, a venue manager for the exhibition space, in an interview with Daily Star U.K. “Things were flying all over the place. There was panic.”
The commander of Esteio’s Fire Brigade, Luciano Machado Morais, explained the collapse.
“The festival was staged in an open area and the speed and strength of the wind proved too much for the capacity of the metal structure over the stage,” he said in a report run by several news outlets.
