Is this for real?
The queen of neo-soul and former Soulquarian member Erykah Badu had a rather peculiar incident on New Year’s eve. While out driving in her hometown of Dallas, TX, the legendary singer and activist was pulled over by police. Because she knew she had done nothing wrong, Erykah decided to film the entire interaction with her apprehending officers.
Turns out the cops weren’t looking to give her a DWI, but rather a DWB (driving while Badu). According to her video, the cop even admits that he only pulled the superstar soul singer over to go full on fan boy.

Happy New Year?
While most of us were watching the lights of fireworks on New Year’s Eve, Erykah Badu was watching the lights of a squad car in her rearview on Sunday night.
Badu is no stranger to run-ins with the law, particularly with the Dallas police department. Back in 2010, while filming a music video for her song “Window Seat,” she was hit with disorderly conduct for appearing nude in Dallas’ Dealey Plaza. While that incident only resulted in a fine, people have criticized the Dallas PD for pursuing the questionable charge.
Considering her history with the law and the fact that she’s Erykah Badu — one of the biggest names in soul music in the world — she knew it might be smart to document her little “encounter” with police.
In her video (that she posted to her Instagram), Badu is seen looking slightly annoyed at the fact that there are blaring cop lights blowing up her rear view window.
“Ok, it’s New Year’s Eve. I just got pulled over…” she says into the camera from the driver’s seat. She then turns the camera to face out the window as she asks two police officers, “and why are you pulling me over?”
“Because I wanted to say hi…”
After Erykah asks the cop why he pulled her over, he let’s out a (rather hilarious) fanboy giggle and responds, “because I wanted to say hi.”
For the most part, the mood felt lighthearted, but you could tell Erykah was slightly annoyed. Whether or not this was a checkpoint was not disclosed, but it’s not uncommon for police officers to run license plates at random to see who’s in the car. This happens even more so during holidays like New Year’s Eve.
Since no one knew exactly why Erykah was pulled over, all people had to go on was this video. It’s hard to jump to conclusions beyond the evidence presented, but one thing is absolutely for certain… that cop really loves Erykah Badu!
People were quick to criticize the cop’s actions on Badu’s Instagram feed, citing how unprofessional it is to pull over famous people to “just say hi.”
Even by the end of the video however, Badu seemed in fairly good spirits. She’s a great actress, but it’s pretty obvious that she’s holding back a little laughter.
Hopefully there was a good reason to pull Ms. Badu over, otherwise this could be considered a blatant misuse of power by these officers.
It’s all good… sorta.
A few days later, after plenty of backlash against the cops from her Instagram followers, Badu felt it necessary to clear the air. She met back up with the two police men who stopped her on New Year’s Eve to show everyone that there was no hard feelings. The whole thing was a gag and everyone was just having a little fun.
Erykah Badu’s police-filled New Year’s holiday wasn’t over after the fanboy police officers though. According to Rebecca Lopez of WFAA News Dallas, police were called later that night when a stalker broke into Badu’s home:
“Dallas Police detained a man who was found trespassing in singer Erykah Badu’s home. Sources say the singer called him a stalker. He was issued a criminal trespass warning.”
What is going on with the police out there in Dallas? First they pull over Erykah Badu to just “say hi,” then turn around and issue a warning to a stalker who was trespassing on her property?
