You can call it a comeback!
It’s been almost 15 years since Bell Biv Devoe released their last album. FIFTEEN YEARS. Can you believe it?! The trio made up of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivens and Ronnie Devoe broke away from the legendary singing group New Edition and created a trio that introduced us to a whole new wave of music. Hits like “Poison,” “Do Me” and “When Will I See You Smile Again?” are classics that are still being played today. Now, the group is back with a hot, new single, claiming that they are still the hottest trio around.
“Poison” was the first single off of BBD’s debut, same-titled album, Poison. The 1990 album peaked at no. 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200, no. 1 on the R&B Albums chart and certified Platinum. By April 1995, it reached quadruple-platinum status with sales exceeding four million copies in the U.S.
Hootie Mack and BBD
After the success of Poison, fans’ expectations of their follow-up album were pretty high. Their next two albums, Hootie Mack (1993) and BBD (2001) didn’t do amazingly well like their debut did. However, Hootie Mack did reach Gold status.
Even though their last two albums flopped, BBD still performed as a group and toured with New Edition, doing reunion shows. I actually had the pleasure of seeing them this past July at the 2016 Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. They were amazing as BBD, but I think I forgot how phenomenal they were as New Edition. Hits for days!
At one point in the show, Bell Biv Devoe took the stage and performed their top three classic hits: “Poison,” “Do Me” and “When Will I See You Smile Again?” The. crowd. was. lit! Every person in the Superdome was on their feet. And they should’ve been! The trio never lost a beat. Ricky still had the croons, Ronnie and Mike still had the flows and they all kept up with the moves.
In their new video, they show you that they’ve still got it. Check them out!
