Sadly, hip-hop has another one to add to the lengthy list of sexual harassment occurrences coming from Hollywood entertainers and celebs.
Ashanti’s interview with SiriusXM’s Conversations with Maria Menounos radio show turned low-key solemn once the star began sharing her #MeToo story. According to the “Foolish” crooner, a producer was so hurt after being turned down that he attempted to overcharge her for a song.
“Unfortunately, these things definitely happen,” Ashanti said.
Long Story Short
“I’ve come across a situation where there was a certain producer that, you know, he had his little crush or whatever, but it wasn’t anything new, you know?” she shared with host Maria Menounos. “Going into the session and recording, it was all good. And once I said ‘no,’ all of a sudden the track became $45K.”
“It’s funny because he said something like, ‘Well just take a shower with me and let me do this,'” she added.
The performer went on to say that thanks to her “really cool, scary big brothers,” who coaxed an apology out of the unidentified producer, all hope wasn’t lost. “The way that apology came in, I actually got three records for free,” she remembered, laughing. “And I got two of them mixed and mastered for free also.”
“I’m blessed because I have that,” the singer continued. “Unfortunately, there are certain females that don’t have a bunch of big brothers to call. You know what I mean? So, does it happen? It does, and it’s unfortunate.”
She added that the #MeToo movement is “encouraging women to be able to say, ‘No, I don’t wanna do this. Don’t put me in this position.'”
The New York native is seemingly all about letting the voices of women be heard… similarly to the way her voice was heard during a concert earlier this month. In the middle of a performance, Ashanti threw some major shade at her ex, Nelly. While it is unclear what triggered such an emotional display, one thing was for sure… She sings well even when she’s upset.
One fan’s camera was up at the perfect moment, catching the star co-sign a fan who blurted out a derogatory comment about the rapper.
“See I just wanna make sure y’all understand exactly what I’m saying… Cause I’ve been betrayed before, publicly at that,” Ashanti stated at the beginning of the video, getting herself ready to belt out her song. “I just wanna make sure y’all feel me.”
After someone in the crowd yelled “f**k Nelly,” the songstress quickly shot back, “word.”
“With all the love that I’ve gave, and all the love that we’ve made,” sang Ashanti, as the crowd went crazy. When The Shade Room got a hold of the clip and posted it on Instagram, fans flooded the comments with love, support and sympathy for the singer.
Many linked her comments to Nelly’s recent sexual assault allegations. Just a few months ago (January 2018), prosecutors had no choice but to drop the sexual assault case against Nelly after the alleged victim, Monique Greene, refused to testify against the star. The “Just a Dream” artist was cleared of all charges, and the Washington State police department concluded their investigation into the matter.
