He has some explaining to do.
A$AP Rocky is no stranger to controversy and being labeled as one of the bad boys in music. The Harlem native is always pushing the boundaries with his creativity and using his voice, but, unfortunately, it didn’t work in his favor with a 2015 interview that resurfaced. The rapper is now facing a ton of backlash from social media after brushing off social injustice issues when he was asked about the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Now, he’s issued a response as he sat down with the Breakfast Club to clear things up.
A$AP received backlash after an old interview surfaced
An interview that Rocky did with Time Out New York recently resurfaced amidst the senseless police killings occurring across the country. In the interview, the rapper dismisses questions about #BlackLivesMatter, revealing that he “did not sign up to be no political activist.”
He brushed off the issues brought up in the interview
Rocky told the interviewer, “So every time something happens because I’m black I gotta stand up? What the f**k am I, Al Sharpton now? I’m A$AP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist. I wanna talk about my motherf**kin’ lean, my best friend dying, the girls that come in and out of my life, the jiggy fashion that I wear, my new inspirations in drugs! I don’t wanna talk about no Ferguson and s**t because I don’t live over there! I live in f**king Soho and Beverly Hills. I can’t relate. I’m in the studio; I’m in the fashion studios; I’m in these b**ches’ drawers. I’m not doing anything outside of that. That’s my life.”
He went on the Breakfast Club after getting ripped apart
Social media had a field day bashing the rapper for his comments in the interview, especially after the recent killings. He decided to do a spontaneous interview with the Breakfast Club in order to clear up his comments, but, unfortunately, it didn’t help his case.
