Aaliyah is getting her own collection.
It’s been over 15 years since Aaliyah passed away in a plane crash in the Bahamas. Thanks to M.A.C., the singer who perished at a tragically young age will finally have her own signature makeup collection.
Similar to the brand’s wildly successful Selena collection, the new makeup line will honor a late legend who died young, subbing an R&B icon for the queen of Tejano. Starting in Summer 2018, fans of the cosmetics brand and the R&B legend alike can snag the products.
“Aaliyah is truly one in a million — an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspires us all,” the brand wrote in an announcement on Instagram. “Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the M·A·C Aaliyah collection. You made it happen! Stay tuned in 2018.”
In addition to the new collection, an official Instagram account for Aaliyah has been launched: @Aaliyah_Haughton. The owners of the account — presumably Aaliyah’s estate — shared a photo of the singer before sharing M.A.C.’s announcement message.
Fans on social media seem to be excited by the idea of Aaliyah finally getting her own signature line. “BABY GIRL IT’S FINALLY YOUR TIME FOR A COLLECTION!” wrote one geeked fan.
The announcement is very timely, as it comes one day before the 16-year-anniversary of Aaliyah’s death. The singer was killed in a plane crash nearly immediately after taking off in a Cessna from an airport on the Abacos Islands in the Bahamas.
The pilot warned the people on the flight that the plane was significantly overweight. The Cessna was found to be 700 pounds overweight, one of the plane’s engines was faulty and cocaine and alcohol were found in the pilot’s system.
The plane made it 200 feet from the runway before it crashed into a nearby swamp and caught fire. The singer perished alongside several record label employees and bodyguards as well as the pilot. The investigation also found that the weight was distributed too far forward in the plane, which may have caused the plane to dive nose-forward.
Aaliyah was recognized as an innovator in her own time and her legacy has only grown since her death. Her radical and slinky style — where she was willing to subsume her vocals in service of the overall song — could be heard in the immediate pop-R&B that followed her. And her moody music served as a launching point for a generation of alt-R&B singers, to make no mention of Drake.
The collection is just another way that Aaliyah has recieved props since her passing. And it’s much deserved.
