SOULSTAR [LIVE AT MEDICI] ft. Michaela West
Devaron Davis, better known as NyCe, born and raised in Wentzville, MO, just west of St. Louis, is a multi-talented rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and actor. Coming up as a kid, his grandfather, Ozzie Lee Perry, introduced him to southern soul, blues, and jazz music. The sounds of Johnny Taylor, Muddy Waters, Al Green, and Anita Baker, to name just a few, rang out in their household daily.
At the impressionable age of 7, he heard a Biz Markie tune on the radio — “Just A Friend.” This song by Biz definitely intrigued his interest for the art of hip-hop. The heavy bass, creative wordplay, and catchy rhythms, all played a dynamic role in the development of NyCe’s lyrical abilities. While his early inspiration centered around soul music, he began to infuse those sounds with the sounds of hip-hop and beat boxing, and by the age of 13, he wrote his very first song and recorded it on a Karaoke Machine. At the age of 18, Nyce released his first mixtape entitled, The Night Is Ours. His sophisticated flow and crafty wordplay stretched the boundaries of hip-hop, bringing a fresh new sound from the middle of the map.
NyCe’s sophmore release, Greenhouse Effect, mixed poetic wordplay and soulful music together. This vibrant, versatile, and sophisticated style has awarded him a growing fan-base from St. Louis to California. This also ushered him into performances at some of the hottest poetry and nightclub spots across the midwest, as well as interviews in publications like Midwest Motion, Jump Fresh Magazineand Rock Paper Podcast.
Nyce’s upcoming release, The LIT EP, is a fine tuned piece of artistry that will certainly relay his passion for music.
