Ali Vegas is a rapper from the South Jamaica neighborhood of Queens. Mentored by MCs like Onyx and Panama P.I., he entered the New York hip-hop scene in the late 90s. In 1999, he appeared on his first track, “The Specialist.” Vegas was first signed by the Trackmaster’s imprint at Columbia Records, but was quickly dropped after the Trackmasters lost their distribution deal with Columbia.

He signed to Tommy Motorolla’s Casablanca Records, but left before he could release an LP after the label flopped. Throughout this time, Ali became established in the New York mixtape circuit. After founding his own label, Council Recordings, Vegas teamed up with his childhood friend and NBA player Lamar Odom to create the record label Rich Soil Entertainment.

Although Vegas has released a substantial amount of music, he never reached the level of stardom he believed he could have attained. In a Doggie Diamonds interview, he suggested that Nas blackballed him in the industry because he felt threatened by Ali Vegas.
