Growing up in Alberta I was introduced to hip hop primarily through breakdancing. My dad worked with indigenous youth but he also had a connection to these people because they were his relatives. Amongst being raised to be proud indigenous Canadians, I showed an immediate love for art. As I grew into an angry young man, music and art were always my go to for stress relief. I had even begun writing songs, but more along the lines of an Usher/Justing Timberlake, vibe. With my parents separating it brought up a lot in our family, and unfortunately we lost contact with my father for sometime. I was your average troubled youth, though I started smoking weed later, getting drunk was an odd pass time at the ages of 13/14
Me and the young homie always causing a ruckus but seeing the disappointment in my my moms eyes was enough. I started heading back to school and doing the right thing, which ultimately saved me. One night, my friends did some dumb shit, got themselves locked up and live changed forever. My best friends was the youngest of the bunch. I never thought I’d be looking at my friend in cuffs at 13. As much as I felt guilty for not being there to possibly pull then away from dumb shit, I wonder if I really would have. But I’m grateful enough to know I was spared. A lot of native youth end up locked up or worse up here in Canada. I truly my best to be a positive light in a dark world. Not just for those who are staying on a good path, but also those of us lost looking for a way back.
