Skematics, born Robert Antonio Gabriel, is a NYC born and raised music artist from the NYC neighborhood Washington Heights.
Growing up in NYC in the 90’s, Hip-Hop was everywhere. So it was at 11 years old that Robert realized that making music was something that he wanted to do. At the age of 12, he joined his schools gospel choir where he received musical training and learned to convert his raps and poems into full songs.
As a teenager, Robert could be found rhyming and battling in ciphers with other young emcees in school hallways, on the streets and anywhere else the challenge was available. Dropping out of High School with the thoughts of pursuing music as a career was the goal for Robert, who would now be recognized as Skematics.
After a few years of traveling and experimenting with sounds and production techniques, he would soon find himself professionally doing what he loves. After releasing the debut mixtape “Before…” he created the “Hit ‘Em Hard Showcase” alongside L.A. Jimenez, presenting Skematics and other upcoming emcees from Uptown, opened up shows for the legendary Sean Price (and recorded with him), Wu-Tang Clan, Joell Ortiz, Tito El Bambino, and DJ Tony Touch
In 2011, Skematics resumed his work on a new mixtape titled “Crash Course.” This opus focused on experimental sounds and neighborly collaborations with other artists. It was finally released in 2012 with the help of DJ PF Cuttin.
More recently, Skematics linked up with emcees such as Saigon and Sean Price (R.I.P). These collaborations appear in Skematics debut EP, titled, “Somewhere In The Gray”. Mixed by well respected industry veteran Luis “Sabor” Tineo and mastered by the one and only Tony Dawsey, this 5 song project shows Skematics’ development as a producer and emcee, expanding on composing, arrangements, live instrumentation and his writing ability to step into the chambers of these reputable artists and hold his own.
Somewhere In The Gray was well received by the Hip-Hop community, with all the singles being reviewed by websites such as Hip Hop DX, This Is 50, 2 Dope Boyz, and Nah Right to name a few.
2020 will prove to be the breakthrough year for Skematics.
