19 years ago today, OutKast dropped their second album. In 1996, a time when East Coast vs West Coast beef dominated news, the eclectic duo from Atlanta represented the South by releasing a classic album. Big Boi and Andre 3000 dropped ATLiens on August 27th, 1996 under LaFace/Arista/RCA.
ATLiens featured three fan favorite singles, “Elevators (Me & You),” “ATLiens,” and “Jazzy Belle.” Sonically, it introduced a sound without samples and the first time Big Boi and 3 Stacks tried their hand at producing. It is certified over 2x platinum by the RIAA and many hip-hop critics consider the LP one of the best albums in hip-hop history.
ATLiens title derives from a series of different concepts. First off, sonically the album had a spacey feel that blended different genres and perfectly complimented the duo’s out of this world lyricism.
Also, Outkast drew inspiration from their Atlanta hometown and feeling like their culture wasn’t represented enough in mainstream America.
19 years later, ATLiens is still a hip hop masterpiece. Do yourself a favor and play this album in order today and refresh your memory by adding some of the songs to your streaming platform playlists. Thank you, Andre 3000 and Big Boi!
