Nicki Minaj always does something memorable at the MTV Video Music Awards, and this year was no different. In addition to completely owning the VMAs, the femcee shocked the live audience and the world with her opening performance. Without any spoilers, let’s just say the Young Money first lady shut down any beef rumors.
Nicki Minaj kicked the show off by performing her reggae-inspired banger “Trini Dem Girls,” and then transitioned into “The Night Is Still Young.” Fans were in for a surprise when Taylor Swift joined the rapper to sing the chorus. The pop-star then closed the set by doing a live rendition of his Katy Perry shade, “Bad Blood.”
If you don’t remember, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift went back and forth @ each other on Twitter over VMA nominations. Their spat led to VMAs host Miley Cyrus straight up dissing the Pinkprint rapper and calling out her character. What happened later on was definitely one of the night’s biggest stories.
Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” ended up winning Hip Hop Video of The Year, and her award acceptance speech was nothing short of memorable. First off, the grateful winner sparked her thank you notes by shouting out her Pastor, but from then on all hell brook loose.
Next, she unexpectedly called out Miley Cyrus with a demeaning tone that is very familiar to hip-hop. After getting pressed, the VMAs host copped the ultimate plea saying how the media spun her words. This is definitely getting interesting.
