Rapper Scarface is definitely considered one of the OG’s in the rap game, so today, we should celebrate him and his legacy. Turning 45 today, the Houston native is getting another year older, and continuing to spread his conscious wisdom throughout the hip hop community. Let’s take a look back at the incredible career of Scarface, and his building legendary legacy.

The MC started out his career as DJ Akshen, working closely with Lil Troy on a local label in Houston in 1989. He later moved on to replacing a member of the Geto Boys before their second album, Grip It! On That Other Level in 1989. He later renamed himself Scarface, which was after the highly famous film of 1983. Shortly after, his success surpassed those of the Geto Boys, forwarding him to launch his own solo career.

Scarface has become a staple MC in the game, and was named as Lyricist of the Year at the 2001 Source Awards. He has collaborated with all kinds of artists from Ice Cube, Nas, Freeway, and many more. He is responsible for fostering the career of Ludacris, as he became the president of Def Jam South, signing him in 2002.

Overall, Scarface has had an incredible career, and is still working hard to keep conscious rap alive. He is very outspoken regarding the social injustice issues occurring throughout the country, and has become a strong voice for the hip hop community. Although he has arguably some of the best lyrics in the game, he is still one of the more underrated rappers in the industry. He was honored earlier this year with the I Am Hip Hop award at the 2015 BET Hip Hop Awards. Happy birthday to Scarface!
