Don't do drugs, kids
Young Thug caused a stir on social media earlier today when he appeared to post a photo of himself finding a new way to do lean. The rapper posted a photo of a purple solution going into his arm via an IV. He topped the photo with the phrase “F–k a double cup I wanna feel it faster.”
Of course, he can’t be taking purple drank of any sort intravenously. It would kill him. But people were still upset over Thug putting the idea out into the world without an obvious disclaimer.
“After roughly 6 years of being a massive Young Thug fan I finally followed him on IG and the motherf–ker got a lean IV,” wrote user @adam22.
“Young Thug pumping lean in his arm through an IV? The addiction epidemic is glorified now so it’s not seen as a problem anymore until someone dies. This. Is. A. Huge. F–king. Problem,” wrote angry Twitter user @_swagtacular_
“Outta all my years in Houston , where n—as drink Lean religiously ..have I EVER seen someone put it in their IV. Young thug gone die,” added a concerned fan by the name of @MissTink_.
The picture is particularly upsetting to hip-hop fans given the way that the entire rap community is trying to come to grips with the drug addictions of its youngest stars. The glorification of prescription abuse amidst an actual nationwide opioid epidemic has not gone unnoticed — and the debate about how much harm these rappers might be doing fired up again following the death of Lil Peep at the age of 21 from an apparent overdose.
The death shook the “up-and-coming wing” of rap music, with many the rappers expressing their grief online or coming to terms with their own drug use. Lil Uzi Vert vowed to try and get sober following the news of the Hellboy rapper’s death.
Though Uzi started off the day by noting that no one pays attention until someone dies (“We Would love 2 stop ….. But Do You Really Care Cause We Been On Xanax All F–king Year”), he turned a corner later and admitted that he was trying to stop using.
“Sober 2 day I have been shaking. I have been cursing my love ones out and fighting/In the studio with no thoughts in my head. Teeth biting down because I just wanna be angry at something,” he said. “Maybe I will just smoke weed tonight.”

That Young Thug was joking about lean — a drug that has lead to serious consequences for rappers like Lil Wayne and the late Pimp C — made his joke all the harder to swallow. (We know, we know.) The glorification of drug use was the exact sort of thing that Thug’s fellow rapper Russ was pushing against in a Twitter rant last month.
“Abusing xanax and other pills drugs etc in private cuz your depressed/other mental issues is one thing(still not good),” Russ wrote. “Constantly recording yourself doing drugs and putting up pics and videos of doing it is when you start CHOOSING to publicly glorify it and make it an image.”
“I don’t have a difficult time finding the correlation between bein depressed & abusing drugs,” he added. “I do however find it difficult to find the correlation between depression & publicly promoting your drug use over & over again via pics/vids. I could b wrong but discussion should b had.”
