Kanye is back!
Besides a few songs and features here and there, Kanye West has been eerily quiet for the past year. The anniversary of his mother’s death took a huge toll on the rapper, leading to a much need break from the limelight. While fans and peers understood his need for space, his disappearance was most definitely felt.
MC Lyte, who usually keeps to herself, even felt the need to address Kanye’s leave of absence. “My dear brother you are on my mind. Where are you? How are you? Will we hear you again?” she said in a sincere Instagram post. “Sing your song my brother, Jesus Walks…He does, your are, because he was. He is, he lives, ask & believe, he’ll manifest the gift—-NEW LIFE —We miss you Kanye.”
Well, he’s broken his radio silence! Saturday, November 4 — exactly six days before the 10th anniversary of his mother’s death — Kanye hit the stage alongside Kid Cudi. During a concert at the Aragon Ballroom Chicago, the “Good Morning” MC surprised fans and media alike as he popped up on stage to perform “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1,” a collaboration him and Kid produced for West’s Life of Pablo album.
Kanye’s waltz back into the spotlight comes almost exactly one year after his 2016 hospitalization. Mid-November of last year, West was rushed to UCLA Medical Center after suffering from what was reported as mental breakdown. The incident happened in the middle of his Saint Pablo tour and shortly after his wife Kim K was robbed at gunpoint in Paris. Throughout the weeks leading up to his breakdown, the “Gold Digger” MC was said to be sleep deprived and an emotional mess as the anniversary of his mother Donda West’s death approached. West then canceled his Saint Pablo tour, sparking the heated lawsuit between him and insurance company Lloyd’s of London.
After his hospitalization, news of Kanye’s health became more and more based on hearsay. The rapper ghosted from social media, showing up on his wife’s social media accounts sparingly. Even the paparazzi had a hard time tracking him down as Kanye went into seclusion.
Like He Never Left
Just because Kanye disappeared from the spotlight though, doesn’t mean everyone stopped giving him attention. Back in September, Pusha T claimed his album was late because Kanye kept sending him back to the drawing board. During his set at this year’s Made In America festival, the G.O.O.D Music artist claimed that he and Kanye had been “locking in” night and day to get King Push “perfect” for fans.
“I’m just gonna go ahead let y’all know. I’ve done this album like three times,” Pusha said. “[Kanye would] come in and pick all the beats, and then he’d hear the beat, scrap them and say, ‘I can do better.’ He’s done that sh*t like three times.”
Over the summer, even Yeezy’s former flame Amber Rose had his name in her mouth briefly. During an interview on Everyday Struggle with DJ Akademiks, Joe Budden and Nadeska Alexis, the “Slut Walk” movement head discussed everything from her recent to projects to her former boyfriend of three years. Tired of the misconception that West is responsible for her fortune and lifestyle, Amber spoke candidly about her time with the Graduation artist. “I still have never said anything mean about Kanye. The only thing that I got from him was fame, and fame don’t get you no f**kin money. Period,” she said.
