They're together, but everything isn't great
There’s a reason Xscape broke up, y’all — and it was on full display in the latest preview of Xscape: Still Kickin’ It. As if the inter-group tension wasn’t bad enough, Jermaine Dupri’s desire to play Yoda with the group led to some heated moments in the latest episode.
In a preview clip of the upcoming show, the group confronts Dupri about lending their music to an unauthorized biopic about the group. When they surrounded Dupri and called him out on it, Dupri called his shady decision a motivational tactic. He said that the release of their music was a way to “kick them in the a– to get up and work.”
“You didn’t know what. You’re just trying to take credit for this reunion. Stop it! OK!” Kandi Burruss responded in the confessional booth.
What ya’ll are doing now,” Dupri says, “is what I knew was going to happen anyway.”
Kandi didn’t take kindly to the idea that Dupri was trying to act like it’s four-dimensional chess to give away the rights to music without asking the artist. She flipped him off.
It was part of it…
That being said, Kandi did admit that the biopic was the reason the group came back together. Xscape didn’t want to let their own story slip out of their hands.
“What happened was a network was going to do an unauthorized movie about us, and of course I’m not going to let somebody just take my legacy,” she told People. “So I called my group members and we were all able to have a conversation to start trying to get our story told the right way.”
However, they weren’t exactly together. The group banded up but weren’t planning on performing or anything. Burruss asked Tamika Scott to apologize for rumors she spread about Burruss and Jermaine Dupri’s father hooking up. When they did that, the word got around that Xscape was back together and the band just rolled with it. Burruss explained:
“I was like, I need a public apology. She’s going to have to say to the world that the stuff that she said about me was a lie. And so in doing that — we did it on the radio — and the radio disc jockey, he’s like, ‘Oh, Xscape is back!’ I was like, ‘Xscape is not back!’ All of a sudden we started getting all these offers to perform and do shows, so I just went with the flow for the moment.”
Tension Runs High
Even though, they have officially reunited, Kandi says that it’s not exactly smooth sailing. All the tensions that led the group to split in the first place are still there on top of years of accumulated beef that the group has gained in each other’s absence. Social media potshots don’t go away just because the group is singing again and Kandi says that their personalities still clash.
“We all think differently when it comes to handling business, or at least, the three of them think differently than me,” Kandi said. “It’s always them three against me, and I feel like I’m always made to be the villain. It’s really irritating and stressful.”
