Hands down, Moesha is one of my faaaaavorite sitcoms in life. Following the life of a teenage girl who experiences all of life’s drama, Brandy Norwood was perfect for the part. With a stern and strict father, a stepmother who she wouldn’t give the time of day, the most annoying little brother ever and best friends, who helped her get out of all kinds of trouble (usually because they were the ones getting her into some), Moesha was a role model for a lot of young black girls.
And let’s not forget the bomb ass appearances from up and coming celebrities at the time. The list goes on and on, but cameos by Usher, Gabrielle Union, Master P and Kobe Bryant when he first got drafted help Moesha become one of the longest running black sitcoms ever. It’s been years since we’ve seen the entire cast. Some went on to have über successful careers while some unfortunately didn’t make it to see their career unfold.
Everybody say “Moeshaaaa!”
With first hits like “I Wanna Be Down” and “Baby,” Brandy was a singing sensation who got her first acting job as “Danesha Turrell” in ABC’s Thea. With Moesha under her belt, her career skyrocketed and has never fallen down. She’s released six studio albums, toured the world and has been names one of the top-selling artists in the U.S. by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). She’s sold over 40 million records worldwide, over 8 million albums and has over 10 million certified albums.
Her acting has also created an impact. She was the first African-American woman to play Cinderella, and Moesha was one of the longest-running black sitcoms of all time. She’s also had a ton of endorsements from Candie’s, CoverGirl, DKNY and more. And she has her own Brandy dolls by Mattel. She’s had her share of engagements, but has remained single and only has one daughter, Sy’rai.
William Allen Young
When I think of Frank Mitchell, I think of his annoying laugh. I also think of how strict he was on Moe. He barely let her live and pretty much watched her every move, which led to her rebellious stage. Since the show, he’s had a successful career on multiple shows like CSI and currently plays Dr. Rollie Guthrie on the CBS’s Code Black.
Sheryl Lee Ralph
In the beginning, Moesha didn’t give her stepmother a chance, but Deidra “Dee” Mitchell was persistent in trying to establish a relationship with Moe. Plus, she was the assistant principal at Moe’s school, so there was no escaping her. Before her time on Moesha, Sheryl Lee Ralph had already starred in the legendary Broadway musical Dreamgirls as Deena. She’s stayed active in her career, playing in a ton of television shows and movies. She also played Lauryn Hill’s mom in Sister Act. Her recent role was Hayden Montgomery in Criminal Minds. She’s married to Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes.
