That wasn't smart
In case fans hadn’t pieced it together already, Tyrese does not like his ex-wife Norma Gibson. The three-year marriage ended in 2009, but, because of the couple’s daughter Shayla, they’ve had to stay in contact. Things got so bad between them that Norma filed a suit against Tyrese, asking a judge to take the singer’s custody of Shayla away.
While that attempt failed, Tyrese still isn’t messing with Norma like that.
During an interview on The Rickey Smile Morning Show, Tyrese spoke… uh, candidly about his and Norma’s marriage. Most likely trying to embarrass the United Kingdom native, Tyrese let it slip that he only married her to make her a U.S. citizen… a.k.a he admitted to marriage fraud, kind of.
“I’m married you to keep you in the country. I never married you to because I was happily married. You’re from London,” he spilled. “We got married with like seven people there.”
This is only the icing atop a badly flavored cake for the Black Rose singer. After a string of controversial videos — showing Tyrese “kidnapping” comedian Michael Blackson — he got some negative feedback.
For those who don’t remember, Michael Blackson is the man who relentlessly teased Tyrese in a video following several of the singer’s bad-press-earning events. In the clip, he told Tyrese that he and other “dark skin ni–as” traded him for Drake and Stephen Curry. “You are no longer considered dark skinned. You did some really red bulls–t yesterday,” the comedian said. He went on to say that he consulted Gucci Mane, Wesley Snipes, and Akon before making the decision to kick Tyrese off the team. The less than a minute long video went viral soon afterwards.
The video made way for public ridiculing at Tyrese’s expense.
So… In response, Tyrese posted a video of Blackson gagged and bound in his underwear on Instagram. Laid across Tyrese’s sofa, the comedian frantically shakes his head as Tyrese questions him about his videos.
“At what point was you gon say ‘I’m doing too much,’” Tyrese began in the Instagram post. “How you gon be on my back, on some funny s–t, while I’m in the middle of a tragedy? You think that s–t funny ni–a?” While pouring what appears to be baby oil on the comedian, Tyrese asks, “Wanna trade me?”
The nearly three-minute-long video worried nearly every one who saw it. Many viewers called the police, leading authorities to immediately rushed to the singers home, fearful that he had kidnapped Blackson out of revenge.
Reportedly, the videos were filmed as a joke, with Blackson’s full knowledge and consent. Regardless, it really didn’t look good. Some even went so far as to continue pushing the message that Tyrese wasn’t mentally fit to have custody of his daughter.
Shortly before police beelined to Tyrese’s house to save Blackson, the “Sweet Lady” crooner had just won 50/50 custody of his daughter Shayla, which he vehemently fought for. Tyrese was found innocent of his ex-wife’s abuse allegations, and the eight-year-long custody battle over 10-year-old Shayla came to an end in late November.
After a Los Angeles judge evenly split custody of the couple’s young daughter between the two of them, the star and his kid went out for sushi at Nobu Malibu. “It’s amazing, man. Gotta come out here and enjoy the ocean,” he told TMZ, still wearing his “Shayla Rocks” hoodie.
“No one wanted to book me doing concerts, no one wanted to have me on their movie sets all because this lady Norma just wakes up one day and decides to accuse me of all this s–t,” the rapper said to the outlet.
