You're not going to want to miss this one

In case you haven’t heard, on August 12 Netflix is set to release a brand new series The Get Down about the birth of hip hop. Nas and Grandmaster Flash are executive producing the show. Baz Luhrmann, director of Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, will be emceeing the project. The show will take place in New York in the 70s and promises to blend classic hits with “contemporary sounds and techniques connecting the dots between then and now.”

The Get Down will attempt to show how the canonical hip hop of the seventies forged the cultural dominance of contemporary hip hop. The seventies were a moment when NYC seemed to be on its knees, Luhrmann explains. Yet a pure and irrepressible creativity forged a genre that has indelibly shaped the history of music. The Get Down will look at the staggering nativity early hip hop from the perspective of a group of friends in the south Bronx.
