"It's never to late to get your education..."
It truly is never too late to go to get your degree. Just look at Nola Ochs! The 95-year-old women was famous on Fort Hays State University’s campus for refusing to let her age get in the way of her education. She graduated with a degree in history in her mid 90s.
Riding the “it’s never too late” wave (joining the likes of J. Cole, Ice Cube, and Ludacris), Swizz Beats will soon be graduating from college. The hiphop artist and producer, born Kasseem Dean, is set to graduate from Harvard Business School in less than a month. He and his wife Alicia Keys boasted the good news on social media.
Celebrating the Positive
While studying on a flight, the “On to the Next One” rapper said:
“School time. Taking off. It’s been a blessing. Coming from the Bronx, going to Harvard. A lot of people was saying ‘why would you go to school.’ It’s never to late to get your education, further your education. Knowledge is power. You know… It don’t even have to be an ivy league school. Just as long as you’re doing your thing, do your thing. You know?”
“From the Bronx to Harvard… I’m in a good space. I’m in a good mood. I’m doing this for my culture, for my kids, for my family, for y’all, for me,” he continued.
Following model Tyra Banks, who graduated from Harvard Business School in 2012, Swizz is studying hard to get his diploma. The artist took a break from music, slowing down on producing and rapping, after he was accepted into the prestigious program in 2014. After growing up in the Bronx in a single-parent home (seeing little of his father after his parent’s separation) and struggling in North East Bronx’s education system, Swizz says his acceptance into Harvard is “something that I never dream of.”
From the Bronx to Harvard
“Coming from the south Bronxs and never really taking a liking to school just because of the circumstances that I was in and I guess the cirucumstances that the teachers were in also,” he began in an interview with VladTV.
“For me to be actually… sittin’ amongst so many great people in my class, coming from where I come from on all circumstances, from my living circumstances, where I grew up at, to the circumstances of the educational system that I was, you know, forced to be in because of where I lived. You know my mother, my parents did a great job, but it still didn’t change the system and the people that were surrounding those systems. But that’s not an excuse for me.”
Wanting to get the full college experience, it was reported in 2014 that the “Everyday Coolin” artist would be staying on campus. His super star wife Alicia and his young son Egypt would visit him at the dorms on the weekends.
The price tag for his ivy league education? With a single credit being $33,000, Swizz paid a pretty penny. However, to him, it was a small price to pay for the piece of mind he will have in business meetings going forward.
“I been in a lot of big deals. I’ve changed a lot of big billion dollar companies… just off of know-how and post and knowing what people like and having tastes that I acquired from traveling. And I remember just sittin in meetings and these meetings would be because of me.
“And I just didn’t feel the proper respect cause I couldn’t really particpate in the other lanuage that was happening in the room. It was almost like ‘ok, this is the rapper and this is the business,” he told VladTV.
Keep your eyes peeled for Swizz sporting that cap and gown. Send him some love and support in the comments, and SHARE this article.
