Surprisingly, Smokepurpp is pro-drugs
Smokepurpp and Russ are polar opposites. Purpp is a perfect example of the drugged out and willfully ignorant music booming out of South Florida. Russ is more akin to the rapper you got really into in college. It’s unlikely that the pair would cross paths in real life. Plus you’d think that their different views on drugs could coexist out there. But thanks to the wonders of the internet, they’re beefing.
Purpp called Russ a b*tch after the rapper went on a long Twitter rant urging rappers to stop glorifying the abuse of drugs in their music, especially prescription painkillers and other opiates.
“Abusing xanax and other pills drugs etc in private cuz your depressed/other mental issues is one thing(still not good),” Russ wrote. “Constantly recording yourself doing drugs and putting up pics and videos of doing it is when you start CHOOSING to publicly glorify it and make it an image.”
He clarified that he had a problem with the glorification of drug use and not necessarily the act itself (though he is famously anti-drug).
“I don’t have a difficult time finding the correlation between bein depressed & abusing drugs,” he said. “I do however find it difficult to find the correlation between depression & publicly promoting your drug use over & over again via pics/vids. I could b wrong but discussion should b had.”
He also said that plenty of people who are actually depressed can still be playing up their drug abuse as part of an image.
“I’m not saying depression/anxiety/addiction aren’t real things,” he said. “They are..just like posting videos and pictures of you doing drugs because a PART of you knows it works as an image is a real thing too. You can be both lol depressed AND posting drug abuse constantly as an image.”
He then compared the glorification of drugs like Xanax to his constant wearing of a certain type of shoe.
“It would be naive to think that me wearing uptempos in every picture isn’t glorifying them or promoting them. Same goes with anything, drugs included,” he said. “Be responsible with your platform.”
Angry Lil Peep fans told Russ that he was using that rapper’s death from an overdose for promotional reasons but Russ countered that saying his message has been consistent.
“I’ve been spoke up bout everything I’m saying for years. The problem is NO ONE LISTENS TILL SOMEONE DIES cuz the world needs tragedy as a f*cking wake up call cuz everyone is asleep just going thru the motions,” he said. “For everyone saying I’m talkin about Lil Peep go look at my t shirt i got dragged for two months ago. Go look at my 2015 tweets and 2016 tweets about this same sh*t. I have been saying this needs to end. It has never been personal with anyone. RIP Lil Peep.”
That wasn’t enough for Purpp who came up in the Xanax-loving wave of Floridian rap.
“Shut the f*ck up. You a b*tch,” he wrote at Ross. “I been doing those things and I’m a Harvard graduate.”
Russ has yet to respond to Purpp’s provocation.
