Did it work?
The broken plate analogy is one of those things that has gained steam all over the internet and it’s easy to see why. The story of someone apologizing to a piece of shattered porcelain and seeing how it doesn’t make the plate come back together again is a good and quick explanation for the way that wrongs can linger even after the offending party has apologized. And maybe the story holds true for the platform it has proliferated on.
Put simply, you can only break the internet so many times before it can’t go back together again. We’ve seen the internet shatter into a million pieces too many times and it looks like we ran out of glue for this latest stunt by Nicki Minaj.
Where previous attempts to “Break the Internet” — a colloquial term for famous people sharing glossy, nude to semi-nude shots — have had something close to the desired effect, Minaj’s latest seems to have been met with a much more muted response.
Trying to Switch It Up
The Paper magazine cover shows Minaj in various states of undress in a three-way with herself. Minaj even supported the video with a behind-the-scenes video that plays like a glitched-out VHS tape of soft-core porn… but the world didn’t stop. And fans we’re confused about the whole ordeal.
Maybe because they felt like Nicki was above the stunt or maybe just because we all know that Nicki has the ability to clamber her way back to the top with her music, the internet’s reaction was mixed.
Either way, something about this whole affair seemed off to fans. And it’s not just the literal answer to the age old “fight or f*ck?” clone question and the fans are quick to notice.
“What the F Nicki mn I love you So much but You’ve been possessed,” wrote one concerned fan.
“Cardi comin for yo ass,” wrote another.
The thing is, hip-hop fans are smart enough to see this for what it is. It’s a dodge and many felt that it was just an attempt to shift the conversation around her if even for a second. Because the news around Nicki has not been good as of late.

The good ship Nicki Minaj has been buffeted on all sides by successive waves of bad news and beefs throughout 2017. First, Remy Ma jumped on her head as a means to vault herself back into the mainstream conversation. Then Cardi B showed her up on the charts and in the song “Motorsport.” Cardi reached heights Nicki never did with her single “Bodak Yellow,” then outclassed her perceived rival in a verse about how she’s above beef.
If that wasn’t enough, her brother was just found guilty of sexually assaulting a child. Jelani Maraj is facing 25 years to life in prison for repeatedly sexually abusing his 11-year-old stepdaughter. Nicki would do anything to get her name attached to some positive news, and putting her body out there is one way to try and seize control of her own narrative.
Unfortunately, the move seems to have landed with a bit of a thud, if the comments on her Instagram are any indication.
Check out the cover up top. What do you think? What would it take for Nicki to get back to her seemingly untouchable status she held just a year or so ago? Is this the way?
