Rich vs. Uzi
On Tuesday, Rich The Kid took to Instagram Live to preview a new diss track directed towards Lil Uzi Vert. The video features him flexing his jewelry and vibing to his new track, in which he takes subliminal shots at Uzi. Rich spits lines that make references to Uzi songs like “Money Longer” and “XO Tour Lif3”, but doesn’t call Lil Uzi out by name directly. See the clip below.
This shot by Rich The Kid comes on the heels of a beef that’s been simmering for some time now. The origins of their conflict, however, actually stem from a conflict between Lil Uzi and his label, Generation Now. DJ Drama and Don Cannon, the owners of the Atlantic Records imprint, signed Uzi back in back in 2015, and it seemed to have been a fruitful partnership for the most part… Until Lil Uzi had something to say on Twitter back in January.
The Diss Track
In a January 12 tweet, Lil Uzi said “And if y’all do sign … sign 2 a major Dont sign 2 a rapper or a Dj ……..Its Just Easier When The Time Come For That Fake S**t”, seemingly targeting Drama and Cannon given the context of the situation. While DJ Drama did respond with a pointed tweet of his own, Rich The Kid chimed in with his own thoughts, tweeting “That’s why you SHOULDA signed Rich forever”. Uzi didn’t take long to check Rich by tweeting “Boy I’m not signing for 20racks”.
Two days later, Rich indirectly invites Lil Uzi Vert to sign to his Rich Forever label via Instagram story, saying “Hey man, [if] your boss ain’t treating you right, your CEO ain’t treating you right, man, come over to Rich Forever Music!” Even if it was very likely that his message was directed at Lil Uzi, Rich The Kid had a change of tone in a February 9 interview with The Cruz Show on Power 106 LA. When asked if he would sign Lil Uzi, Rich responds with “Not right now, maybe back then,” adding that he wouldn’t sign him for personal reasons.
A Crab Tho?!
The tension escalated sharply when Lil Uzi took an avant-garde shot at Rich The Kid on February 26, tagging him as a large crab being held by Uzi. In the same day, Rich The Kid claps back by taking the photo and reposting it with the caption “Aw look at my son @liluzivert tryna look jus like me”, most likely referring to Uzi’s green dreads. Uzi’s dyed braids aren’t anything new, so it’s likely that Rich’s goal was to be more antagonizing than accurate.
With his debut album The World Is Yours coming out March 30, this beef lands in a convenient position to generate buzz around Rich The Kid’s name at a critical point in his music career. Milking the tension for all its worth, Rich most recent action to keep their feud going happened yesterday, with a retweet of a fan-made picture of Rich eating a slice of pizza with Uzi’s face on it. See the tweet here.
It’s Not That Serious
In reality, this “beef” doesn’t seem to be taken too seriously on either side. As they say, any publicity is good publicity, so maybe Rich’s incentives may have more to do with it being kept alive than some may recognize. From looking at Uzi’s recent social media activity, he’s probably not losing any sleep over this. What do you think of Rich’s diss track? COMMENT below and SHARE this article!
