From rags to riches
Almost every rapper has a rags to riches story. That’s pretty much where the bulk of their lyrics come from. Some have been had drug-addicted parents, some have been shot at, some have even been shot!
Drake claims he started from the bottom, but let’s be honest: We’ve all watched him as Wheelchair Jimmy on DeGrassi. So he didn’t have it that bad. There are some rappers who claim to have had it hard, but their lives were a walk in the park compared to those who really had it rough. Here are some of your favorite artists who have literally started from the bottom before making it to the top.
Nas was born in Queens, NY, and as a kid grew up in the projects. He dropped out of school in the 80s after the 8th grade. He educated himself on African culture through the Five Percent and Nuwaubian Nations. He then began rapping. Lucky for him, he made it to be one of the greatest rappers of our time.
Nicki was born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago where she lived with her grandmother. Her alcoholic and violent-tempered dad burned their house down in 1987. When she was five, her mom moved her and her siblings to Queens, NY. Once she rose to stardom, she admitted that she never wanted to go back to the way she lived as a child.
“I never want to go back to being poor. Once you have a taste of that you will always be driven. I know what that felt like and I don’t want to feel it ever again. So, yeah, I mean my childhood was crazy but it got me to the point where I had so much faith in whatever I was doing. I just always feel where there’s a will there’s a way and I live my entire life that way now,” she said in an interview with ContactMusic.
K dot was born in one of the most dangerous cities in California, Compton, where he was surrounded by drugs, poverty and gang violence. He kept his head on straight, stayed out of trouble and eventually got out of there. On the track “Sing About Me” he details staying out of trouble as a youngster.
